Shopify selects Sustaera for a multi-year carbon removal agreement with its novel direct air capture technology
MARCH 28, 2022
Today, we are excited to announce that Shopify has agreed to purchase 5,000 tonnes of carbon removal from Sustaera starting in 2024. With this purchase, Shopify will become Sustaera’s largest customer to date, and we will be able to expedite deployment of our direct air capture technology.
Sustaera’s technology uses naturally available abundant materials, which rapidly absorb atmospheric CO2, and can be efficiently regenerated by integrated electrical heating powered by renewable energy. Combined with a modular component design, Sustaera can achieve CO2 capture costs below $100 per tonne at scale.
With nearly 40,000 tonnes of long-term CO2 removal purchased, and its Sustainability Fund dedicated to supporting tech-driven entrepreneurs at the frontier of reversing climate change, Shopify has helped accelerate early learning curves in direct air capture.
“The potential for Sustaera to deliver extremely low-cost direct air capture carbon removal captured our attention during the application process and ultimately led to this purchase,” said Stacy Kauk, Shopify’s Head of Sustainability. “I urge other companies to follow our lead and support Sustaera if we truly want direct air capture to be an affordable part of reaching net zero.”
Establishing a reputable market leader like Shopify, a leading provider of essential internet infrastructure for commerce, and one of the largest corporate purchasers of long-term carbon removal, as a customer, provides a strong vote of confidence for our technology. We hope it continues the momentum of companies supporting direct air capture and helps increase demand for carbon removal and Sustaera’s technology.
Raghubir Gupta, PhD, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Sustaera said, “We are thrilled to partner with Shopify, which is our largest customer to date. Companies like Shopify are leading the world in enacting change. They’re helping companies like Sustaera provide a viable solution by helping bring down the cost of carbon removal and improving the pace at which we can scale, helping us get closer to our goal of 500M tonnes of carbon removal by 2040.”
If other market leaders follow Shopify’s lead, we at Sustaera strongly believe that we can achieve our mission of restoring the carbon balance.
